COVID-19 Symptoms - 3 levels of changes to your diet to put out the fire in your lungs. Hint: Lower sugar!

Three ways to dampen or extinguish your "cytokine storm"

Research indicates that the lung destroying "cytokine storm" often associated with COVID-19 is fueled by excessively high blood glucose.  This is especially important for diabetics.  Just be aware that when you are sick you may develop diabetes even though you don't normally have high blood sugar levels. This also commonly occurs during pregnancy. Cravings for your favorite carbohydrate comfort foods could be fueling the fire. Are these cravings indicating they are good for you or just the equivalent of heroin addiction?

1. Immediately stop eating fast-acting carbs

Fast-acting carbs raise your blood sugar quickly. Here's a sample list from the greater to lesser poison:

  • candy
  • soda
  • fruit juice (spikes blood glucose just like a cola)
  • honey
  • fruit
  • bread
  • pasta
  • rice
  • potatoes
  • oatmeal

The idea is to decrease the ratio of carbs you are eating.  If you are not feeling satisfied add extra natural fats such as olive oil, coconut oil, or avocado oil. Animal fats are fine.  The extra fat decreases your hunger and also takes the place of the huge volume of carbs most of us eat.  Switch to slower-acting carbs from non-starchy vegetables such as squash, beans, cucumbers, cabbage, and other similar vegetables.

Meal portions:

  • Over 2/3 meat/protein & natural fats/oils
  • Less than 1/3 carbohydrates (preferably not on the fast-acting list)

Next... to crank it up a notch...

2. Focus on protein, fat & non-starchy vegetables

Lower all carbs dramatically.  Avoid processed seed oils as they are inflammatory.  If you feel carb withdrawals add extra coconut oil or olive oil and put plenty of salt on your food.  If you get muscle cramps, you need more salt!

This can take a few weeks to adapt to and may be difficult if you are not feeling well.  Just do your best.  Keep the sugars & starches low.

This can put you into a fuel-burning mode that was common a few hundred years ago but in modern society, most have not experienced this since being weaned from their mother's breast. In the absence of glucose, your liver will produce ketones from fat.

and then for a kickstart...

3. Ketone Ester booster

After my family's experience with COVID-19, I'm keeping a bottle of ketone esters in our emergency kit.  They are a food supplement not a medicine, that on an empty stomach or in the absence of fast-acting carbs get's you quickly burning ketones.  Ketones also blunt the cytokine storm.  KE1 from KetoneAid has been tested in trials and used by sports professionals but they also have other options. With my wife, we did the same thing with a 72 hour fast but ketone esters go into effect within half an hour.  It doesn't take much, usually only 20ml on an empty stomach is sufficient.

Disclaimer:  These are just things I've learned from experimenting with myself and my family.  If you are worried about diet changes, consult your health professional.  Biohack away!  Make changes and see if your symptoms improve. It could two or three days to notice a difference with options 1 & 2.
